On 16 April 1746 the last pitched battle fought on British soil took place on this bleak moor near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. The Jacobite uprising led by the exiled ‘Bonnie’ Prince Charles Edward Stuart was devastatingly defeated by the government troops. This not only marked the beginning of the end of the traditional Highland way of life, it still evokes more emotions than any other historic place in Scotland.

In 2004 GHA won the competition for new visitor facilities and interpretive landscaping of the battlefield site for the National Trust for Scotland. The new visitor centre will house interpretation of the battle, its prehistory and aftermath. It will also include educational and conference facilities, café, restaurant, shop and staff accommodation. The project is due for completion for Scotland’s Year of Highland Culture 2007.
