Situated along the northern edge of Edinburgh's historic New Town, this £7M project looks at combining a wide range of new health facilities providing local and wider outreach services within the city. The new building is to sit along a long narrow site that slopes steeply down from the higher retaining walls of the Georgian New Town, to the banks of the Water of Leith. The design organises the local health services into a 'wall' of accommodation raised above a plinth of on site car parking, allowing the new public spaces to open out into a contained south facing garden, whilst giving privacy to the consulting suites along the street edge. The family planning facilities are located at the busier east corner of the site at the junction of India Place and Gloucester Street. The new centre provides a range of information, consulting and surgical spaces with a health information café to encourage a more open, accessible and informative environment for patients.
