The first of these is for the prominent pierhead site that reaches out into the Clyde Estuary from the town’s waterfront location. Beating off stiff competition from 12 other shortlisted entries this win comes less than a week after the project won a <span class="caps">GIA</span> Award for Conservation.</p> <p>Widely praised in the press after its opening on 29th July the museum has seen visitor numbers far surpass expectations with over half a million visitors passing through the doors in the first two months. The award recognises the best building in Scotland and has a £25,000 first prize.</p> <p>The jury at the shortlisting stage was chaired by Andrew MacMillan and included <span class="caps">RIAS</span> president Sholto Humphries, Sandy Robinson, principal architect at the Scottish government’s Architecture and Place division, and Jonathan Speirs of Speirs + Major Associates. This eagerly awaited day comes after 3 years of closure during construction and more than 7 years of design development, fund raising and hard work behind the scenes. A 4 day series of events honouring the vast number of people who worked on, supported or donated to the project culminates in a major celebration in immediate advance of the opening.</p> <p>At 9.15am festivities begin with a street party, featuring an animatronic T.rex making its way up Chambers Street, aquatic sea creatures dancing and the Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers playing on the steps of the museum. At 10am the Evening News child competition winner will knock on the doors of the Museum to cue a unique fanfare on the Carnyx, a 2,000 year old Scottish war horn. The Private View of the exhibition titled 3×3 saw the Findlay Room at the <span class="caps">RSA</span> packed with guests eager for a first look at the work on display by the three featured practices – Gareth Hoskins Architects, Reiach & Hall Architects and Sutherland Hussey Architects, the principals of which practices are the three most recent <span class="caps">RSA</span> academicians. The show provided a rare opportunity for three of Scotland’s leading design firms to work together and in addition to the exhibition itself there is an accompanying box-set of three small books, available through the <span class="caps">RSA</span>, which includes an introduction by Hugh Pearman, texts on and images of the featured projects from each practice.
