Helensburgh Draft Masterplans - Public Consultation

Hoskins Architects have been appointed by Argyll & Bute Council to prepare masterplans for the development of two of the largest and most significant sites within the planned Victorian town of Helensburgh. The first of these is for the prominent pierhead site that reaches out into the Clyde Estuary from the town’s waterfront location. The second is for the regeneration of the 14 acre former Hermitage Academy site to the east of the town centre left vacant after the construction of the new Academy.

The various options for the integration of new sports, retail and residential facilities on both of these sites are to be presented at an exhibition within the town on 13 & 14 January 2012 to allow the local community to discuss, comment and give feedback before the masterplans are developed in more detail.

GHA shortlisted for Bird College RIBA Competition

Gareth Hoskins Architects have been selected from over 95 entries as one of the six shortlisted firms competing to design new facilities for Bird College in Kent, a leading performing arts school for dance, music, and theatre performance.

The £13million project, encompassing 6,000m² of accommodation, will involve the rationalisation of existing facilities, and development of new buildings for the College, which is currently spread over three sites in a residential neighbourhood in Sidcup.

The teams will undergo an interview process and present their further developed ideas to the jury panel in the New Year.

National Museum - Best Building in Scotland

Gareth Hoskins Architects is thrilled to announce the National Museum of Scotland has won the 2011 RIAS Andrew Doolan Award for the best building in Scotland, the UK’s most lucrative architecture prize. Beating off stiff competition from 12 other shortlisted entries this win comes less than a week after the project won a GIA Award for Conservation.

Widely praised in the press after its opening on 29th July the museum has seen visitor numbers far surpass expectations with over half a million visitors passing through the doors in the first two months. The Awards jury described the redevelopment of the building as a ‘brilliantly clever piece of work’ that has transformed the building into a ‘truly world class Museum’.

Gareth Hoskins Architects led a team of consultants and contractors including David Narro Associates, Max Fordham LLP, Gardiner & Theobald, Ralph Appelbaum & Associates and Balfour Beatty to deliver what was one of the most complex and sensitive construction projects in Scotland, on time and on budget.

GIA Award for National Museum

Gareth Hoskins Architects’ critically acclaimed redevelopment of the Grade A listed National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh has received a Glasgow Institute of Architects Design Award at the annual awards ceremony held on Friday 11 November.

The National Museum of Scotland reopened to the public on Friday 29 July and has since seen visitor numbers massively exceed expectations, with more than half a million visitors within the first month.

Architects in Practice Lecture Series

Director Chris Coleman Smith has been invited to speak at the University of Newcastle on 16 November 2011, as part of the ‘Architects in Practice’ lecture series. The lecture will be at 5pm in the Fine Art lecture theatre. The intention of the series is to present Gareth Hoskins Architects projects and discuss the current issues and opportunities facing architects in practice today.

Scottish Civic Trust Conference 2011

The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Heritage + Development = ’, and Chris will be speaking about Gareth Hoskins Architects’ recently completed redevelopment of the National Museum of Scotland.

National Museum on RIAS Doolan Award Shortlist

Gareth Hoskins Architects’ major redevelopment of the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh is one of 13 buildings to make the shortlist for the annual RIAS Andrew Doolan Award, announced today. The award recognises the best building in Scotland and has a £25,000 first prize.

The jury at the shortlisting stage was chaired by Andrew MacMillan and included RIAS president Sholto Humphries, Sandy Robinson, principal architect at the Scottish government’s Architecture and Place division, and Jonathan Speirs of Speirs + Major Associates. For the next stage of judging the jury also including David Mackay Hon FRIAS of MBM Architects, Barcelona, and Neil Baxter, RIAS Secretary, will conduct a round of building visits to meet clients and architects for each project.

The winning project will be revealed at an event in the Scottish Parliament on Thurs 17 November.

Designs revealed for City Garden

Gareth Hoskins Architects, in collaboration with Snohetta, have been named as one of six finalists vying to design the new Aberdeen City Gardens project, which will transform the existing Victorian Union Terrace Gardens to create a new landmark urban space for Aberdeen. Requirements for the design include the provision of a cultural building, new green spaces, level access and place-making.

Designs were unveiled at a public exhibition at The Academy, Belmont Street, which will run from 19 October until 2 November 2011.

Following the exhibition, interviews with the jury will be held, with the winner being announced in mid November.

Reawakening the Museum - National Museum of Scotland Reopens

Hoskins Architects newly completed £47m redevelopment of the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh finally opens its doors to the public on Friday 29 July. This eagerly awaited day comes after 3 years of closure during construction and more than 7 years of design development, fund raising and hard work behind the scenes. A 4 day series of events honouring the vast number of people who worked on, supported or donated to the project culminates in a major celebration in immediate advance of the opening.

At 9.15am festivities begin with a street party, featuring an animatronic T.rex making its way up Chambers Street, aquatic sea creatures dancing and the Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers playing on the steps of the museum. At 10am the Evening News child competition winner will knock on the doors of the Museum to cue a unique fanfare on the Carnyx, a 2,000 year old Scottish war horn. A crescendo of Chinese Firecrackers will then signal that the public will once again be allowed to enter the museum!

CONGRATULATIONS to two of our team who are now BREEAM Registered Accredited Professionals. Nick Domminney and Tim Harland join only 11 other BREEAM AP’s registered in Scotland.

BREEAM is considered to be the world’s leading design and assessment method for sustainable buildings and achieving a “very good” or “excellent” rating is increasingly required by private clients as well as government and public bodies. Appointing a BREEAM AP at an early stage of design development not only assists the design team to achieve the highest possible rating, it can also confer an additional two BREEAM points. This can sometimes be the difference between gaining or losing the required rating. Nick and Tim’s training will assist sustainable design for all practice projects as well as development of our Environmental Management System

3x3 Private View

On Friday 17 June at 6pm the very successful opening of the Academy’s first ever exhibition solely dedicated to architecture took place at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. The Private View of the exhibition titled 3×3 saw the Findlay Room at the RSA packed with guests eager for a first look at the work on display by the three featured practices – Gareth Hoskins Architects, Reiach & Hall Architects and Sutherland Hussey Architects, the principals of which practices are the three most recent RSA academicians. The show provided a rare opportunity for three of Scotland’s leading design firms to work together and in addition to the exhibition itself there is an accompanying box-set of three small books, available through the RSA, which includes an introduction by Hugh Pearman, texts on and images of the featured projects from each practice. An introductory speech at the opening was kindly delivered by sculptor Bill Scott.

The exhibition runs until 24 July, entry is FREE .
RSA opening times are Mon-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 12-5pm

3x3: 3 Architects, 3 Projects, 3 Ideas

3×3 is the first in a series of exhibitions to be held at the Royal Scottish Academy that are focused on architecture. The exhibition looks at the work of the RSA’s most recently appointed academicians, the architects Gareth Hoskins, Neil Gillespie and Charlie Sutherland, and it centres on the ideas underpinning the approach of these 3 architects and their practices through 3 of their projects.

The 3×3 exhibition opens on 18th June 2011 and runs for 5 weeks.

RSA New Contemporaries Exhibition

Gareth Hoskins was invited to be the Vice-Convenor of this year’s RSA New Contemporaries Exibition which opens on 19 March 2011, and runs until 13 April 2011. The exhibition presents Scotland’s finest emerging artists and architects, with submissions from art schools and universities across Scotland. The opening reception and award presentation takes place on Friday 18 March 2011.
