Gareth Hoskins Architects were commissioned to carry out a feasibility study to convert a disused industrial warehouse into a permanent home for The National Theatre of Scotland, while also providing flexible accommodation for complimentary organisations, activities and events.
GHA’s proposal combined spatial interplay to provide a terrace to the south end, with a strong and functional divide, forming a defined space. This created a controlled environment for the entire southern half of the warehouse, separated by an ephemeral and shifting double skinned wall. On the other side of the dividing wall, the north warehouse was left open, as a pure portrayal of its industrial character. This space was to be used for public events and functions, as well as providing a recreation area for the people working in the building. With mixed inhabitation of the building by other arts-related organisations, the warehouse could undoubtedly become an interesting cultural show-case for the local community and developing creative industries.
