Housesteads Visitor Experience
Northumberland, England

Housesteads is the most complete and best preserved Roman fort in Europe. This scheduled ancient monument, jointly managed by the National Trust and English Heritage, is located on Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site and commands the dramatic landscape of Northumberland National Park. It has witnessed over 4000 years of human occupation.

Currently attracting approximately 100,000 visitors every year, the project’s aim is to ensure that it remains the pivotal ‘must see’ site in any visit to Hadrian’s Wall.

Following a highly publicised national competition, Gareth Hoskins Architects were selected, along with the impressive team of engineers and landscape architects which delivered the award winning Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre, to furnish a major reworking of the visitor experience. The £3.8 million project aims to improve the current educational and interpretive facilities adjacent to the fort, replace the current visitor reception and parking and introduce new interpretation of the ancient and biodiverse landscape.
