George House
George Square, Glasgow

Overall, the purpose of this feasibility study was to assess the potential for redevelopment of this valuable site and particularly to assess the scale, form, massing and height of any new building that could take the place of the current structure.

George House is a late 1970’s office building located on the north side of George Square. The poor quality architecture is in sharp contrast to the majority of the surrounding buildings, many of them listed, extremely fine, well-proportioned and grand buildings as befitting the George Square address. The key findings pointed towards complete redevelopment of the site for a significant new building to create better definition on the northern side of the square and a legible reference to the Glasgow Metropolitan College tower beyond. Design should be of the highest order and the findings of the study sought to illustrate a credible design approach and to set some parameters for the next stage of the design process.
