Jacobite Discovery Project
Loch Ness, Inverness-shire

Gareth Hoskins Architects were invited by Jacobite Cruises to submit design proposals for a new £2.5m tourism facility on the shores of Loch Ness. The facilities were to include a new harbour, car park, visitor centre and reception area. The prominent site on the edge of the Loch offered the opportunity to create a new identity and clearly recognisable presence for Jacobite Cruises. The practice’s design places the new building immediately adjacent to the road and the existing underpass allowing both an easy, covered route for visitors from the car park to the jetty and a strong visual presence on the approach along the A82. The new building is envisaged as a ‘beacon’ on the edge of the Loch, the tall lantern over the main circulation acting as a marker both from the road and the water and framing the views out over the Loch
