Commercial developer, Redevco, commissioned Gareth Hoskins Architects to undertake a series of feasibility studies over 2006 to 2008, for a large well known department store on Glasgow’s busy Argyle Street. The store had subsequently been converted into smaller shop units but the 8000 sq.m upper floors were unused.
The architects were asked to consider alternative uses for the upper floors, along with the feasibility of double height glazed frontages to the 5000sq.m+ ground and first floor shops. Options for improving the marketability of the shop units by improving services and access to upper floors were also considered.
The client then asked the architects to undertake a more detailed study for a budget hotel on the upper floors with some adjustments to the shop units below. A 151 bedroom hotel design was developed with help from a budget hotel company, including a dramatic atrium to deal with a deep floorplan, and a variety of entrance locations and options. The project is presently unrealised.
