In 2004 Gareth Hoskins Architects were commissioned by an international development company to design Alloa Academy secondary school, as part of the consortium bidding for the Clackmannanshire PPP project. This was a direct result of GHA’s well received and critically acclaimed designs for exemplar schools, as part of the Clackmannanshire Schools for the Future project.
The innovative design of the Alloa Academy is based around flexible learning spaces that use new technology to allow a wide range of teaching for approximately 1000 pupils. Central to the design approach was the desire to create spaces that would be inspiring and conducive to creativity; furthermore each learning space, classroom or circulation area has a direct connection with the outside landscape which breaks down the institutional feel associated with many new schools. Classroom ‘hubs’ are located around flexible teaching spaces that open onto the main circulation ‘street’ and create areas of activity and as one moves through the school.
