As a result of our previous work on exemplar education projects, Gareth Hoskins Architects were commissioned in 2005 to be lead designer on a consortium bid for four new secondary schools ranging in size from eleven hundred to sixteen hundred pupils with construction value of £70M. The practice was responsible for the designs for two of the schools, St Mungos Academy and Denny High School, while having a design overview of the two remaining.
The challenge with secondary schools of this size is the school’s requirement to create a safe and secure environment balanced with the needs of pupils and staff to work in spaces that are non-institutional, uplifting and conducive to creativity and learning. Our schemes for both schools incorporated break-out and social spaces, courtyard areas and links to the landscape within efficient and considered layouts, and were praised for managing to achieve a level of design quality within the tight budgetary constraints imposed by the PPP process.
