Ballymena Health and Care Centre is the first in a series of new healthcare projects that the collaborative architectural team of Keppie Design and Gareth Hoskins Architects have been appointed to design for the Northern Health Trust through the PCCI Framework for Northern Ireland Health Estates.
The 8,000 m2 centre on the existing Braid Valley Hospital site brings together a wide range of primary, intermediary, diagnostic and community health facilities. The clinical departments are split across two floors organised around the main arrival space, an internal atrium, and an open courtyard which together clearly orientate the building users to the different departments and allow natural daylight and ventilation to reach the large number of cellular spaces that make up each department. On the third floor staff office accommodation is located around the atrium below the undulating roof. The building has been designed to achieve a BREEAM excellent rating while its brick finish provides a public presence in the community.
