This project involved the conversion of the existing assessment ward within Leverndale Hospital, Glasgow to provide a model environment for the care of dementia sufferers. A variety of naturally lit and intimate day spaces were provided, allowing care to take place on a more appropriate domestic scale, and forming a route through the ward that connects out into the new landscaped garden. The works were carried out in a number of phases, all whilst ensuring the continual and smooth operation of the 24 bed ward. The design was used as a case study for the ‘Designing for Dementia’ project, and was presented to an international conference on dementia.
GHA have a continued interest and involvement in the design for dementia through their participation in the annual Design and Dementia summer school run by the Dementia Services Development Centre at the University of Stirling.
