This project involved the development of a masterplan to reinvigorate and expand the Museum of Flight at East Fortune, a scheduled ancient monument and recognised as the most intact second world war base in Great Britain. Gareth Hoskins Architects were appointed to produce a 10 year masterplan and implement a short term, three year stop-gap proposal with a fund of £1.5 million. The design team were appointed under an RIAS standard form of agreement, won through an invited competition held by the National Museums of Scotland.
The aim was to transform the base into a world class visitor attraction by implementing a series of measures including: the short term renovation of existing buildings and site; improving site access and orientation, and the provision of a 10 year masterplan. The masterplan was to include a new visitor building which would become the flagship exhibition of the museum, housing Concorde, and with an overall projected value of £10-15 million.
