From an international field of architects in 2004 Gareth Hoskins Architects were the only Scottish practice chosen as one of 8 finalists for the prestigious Riverside Transport Museum in Glasgow, a new world-class visitor attraction and landmark for the city. One of only 3 practices invited to the final interview, they were narrowly beaten by architects Zaha Hadid.
Gareth Hoskins Architects put forward a proposal for a striking new museum building of 10,000 square metres, consisting of interlinked bays that sit moored on the side the river bank, echoing the scale and presence of the shipbuilding sheds that once lined the banks of the Clyde. This flexible gallery environment would allow a range of different visitor routes and journeys. Through the integration of its associated landscaping and consideration of sense of arrival and place, this new world-class museum would form a new public destination within the Glasgow Harbour development that connected directly with its dramatic riverside setting.
