Royal Museum Redevelopment

This significant project was the result of Gareth Hoskins Architects winning an international competition in 2005 for the redevelopment of the Royal Museum in Edinburgh, part of the National Museum of Scotland. The practice had previously won the competition to masterplan the development in 2003. The museum’s location within Edinburgh and the signi?cance of its priceless collections, along with those of the adjoining Museum of Scotland, provide a platform from which to create a world class visitor experience.

Proposals for this prestigious project involve a series of major architectural works to the Grade A listed complex of buildings, including a more accessible ‘street level’ entrance, new circulation routes to encourage visitors to discover more of the museum’s collections, new learning zones as well as restaurants and shopping facilities. Scotland’s largest Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) award of £16,865,000 was announced in July 2005 for the Royal Museum project and redevelopment is currently underway, scheduled for completion in 2011.
