Volume house builders, Mactaggart & Mickel, appointed Gareth Hoskins Architects to establish the feasibility of constructing dwellings on one of their long held residual sites within an established suburban housing area. The site is extremely challenging heavily wooded narrow north facing with a storey and a half drop across its narrowest point. In consultation with the planners, GHA developed a four storey cranked block of 12 two bedroom apartments on two stairs with access at the first floor from Hill Crescent. Top floor apartments enjoy a double height mezzanine within the pitched roofspace. Blocks are finished with terracotta coloured clay tile roofs and walls, aluminium clad window reveals and plinth. The steeply sloping retaining walls which form the on street residents and visitor parking, are stepped gabions which will soon be covered in planting.
