Ravelrig House
Balerno

The Burrell Company, established in 1980, has the reputation of being a design-led developer that works with some of the leading architectural practices in Scotland. Gareth Hoskins Architects began working with The Burrell Company on Ravelrig House, Balerno in July 2000. The £2.25M project involved the conversion of a former Barnardo’s Home, originally a mansion house, into luxury housing.

Located on the outskirts of Balerno in West Lothian and within a designated Greenfield site, the project was divided into two distinct groups. The first was the Steadings, comprising of a collection of B-listed 17thC stable buildings and an interwar cottage to be converted into five two-bedroom luxury dwellings. The second was Ravelrig House itself, comprising of an original house, parts of which date back to the 15th Century, and an interwar extension that doubled the size of the original building. The original house and extension would be physically separated and each was converted into three three/four bedroom luxury dwellings.
