MacTaggart and Mickel Ltd. commissioned Gareth Hoskins Architects in 2008 to propose a residential development on Ripon Drive in Glasgow. Located within the client’s 1940’s Kelvindale housing estate, the development comprises a single four storey block of 13 two bedroom balconied apartments and two rooftop penthouses, one with roofdeck. Existing lock ups, belonging to locals, and an existing prefabricated concrete scout hall are replaced on site. The project received planning approval in June 2009.
The housing is a single brick clad block, modelled to adjust to the constraints at points within the site and incised to form timber lined enclosed balconies. Scout hall and lock ups are combined to create a single building, in contrasting deep blue brick, which encloses the furthermost boundary and provides a visual stop to the site entrance. Hard landscaping to non-adopted areas is brick paviours with trafficked areas in gravelled blacktop and concrete kerbs.
