A model project to provide independent living to suit the specific needs of people suffering from alcohol induced dementia, for clients Cloch Housing Association, Inverclyde Social Services and Communities Scotland. The project included 12 flats for Korsakoff’s sufferers, with 3 mainstream flats and day care facilities, on an extremely tight site above Greenock town centre. Wheel chair access was required to all Korsakoff flats and a lift was included in the close.
The layout of the buildings on the site, loosely reflect the former street pattern with three and four storey buildings grouped around a rear courtyard. The flats are orientated to maximise views across the Clyde and Regent Street from the living accommodation. External materials were chosen to compliment the surrounding buildings. The cross fall of the site required the buildings to sit on plinths, offering several benefits including a level floor plan for the Korsakoff tenants and space for the plant room and bin stores.
