Wimpey Housing Development
West Road, Haddington

George Wimpey East Scotland set a competition to build high quality, high specification, housing on a large open site within the Conservation Area of Haddington, the historic East Lothian market town. Gareth Hoskins Architects won against stiff opposition from some of Scotland’s best designers.

The GHA proposal envisaged a large “village green” on the ridge top, thus retaining extensive views of the Lammermuir Hills from the surrounding Victorian villas. Low courtyard houses fringed the “green” along the brow of the slope capturing the southern vista. Below the brow, dramatic gable fronted villas also had views to the south while defining a welcoming public space along the town’s main approach road. Larger five bedroom villas formed the western edge of the new public park, while the local authority’s requirement for social housing was integrated into the development’s south west edge.

After extensive consultation, the development received a unanimous vote of approval from East Lothian Council planning committee.
