Gareth Hoskins Architects worked alongside Event to submit proposals for the Burns Heritage Centre and narrowly missed out in the final stages. The project offers the opportunity to rethink the visitor’s experience to create one that evolves out of the interpretation of the poet’s work and looks beyond the buildings’ focused ‘visitors centre’, to create an experiential journey that presents the Burns story through a combination of landscape, enclosure and experience. Unlike many other literature related attractions, which are often a single property the Burns National Heritage Park is centred around a number of historic structures in a village setting. The poet’s relationship both to these surroundings and his times are key to understanding him and his work. The physical design needs to support and reinforce the way in which the story is told, taking full advantage of the surroundings to create an experience that is engaging, interactive and informative for visitors of all ages.
