National developer, George Wimpey, wanted
a high quality, high specification, housing development so it set an architectural
competition for a large open site which it had aquired within the Conservation
Area covering the centre of the historic East Lothian town of Haddington.
Gareth Hoskins Architects won, against stiff opposition from some of Scotland's
best designers. Our proposal envisaged a large "village green" on
the ridge top, retaining extensive views of Trapain Law and southern farmland
from surrounding Victorian villas and an approach road into the town. Low
houses fringe the "green" along the brow of the ridge while, at
the foot of the slope, a dramatic gabled frontage of tall villas define a
welcoming public space to major town entrance road but still gain distant
views to the south. Negotiations are underway with local the Planning authority
with the intention of an application in summer this year.
