This competition winning design by Gareth Hoskins Architects for an innovative play area within Bellahouston Park for Glasgow City Council, was completed in 2002 and it is still as popular as the day it first opened. The imaginative landscape creates opportunities and places within which artworks and play pieces have been gradually added and where children (and adults) can lose themselves in play.
The ground is moulded to form a landscaped ‘carpet’ of elliptical mounds and bowls which creates a series of intertwining routes for running and places for activity and objects. The play pieces developed carry on the theme of moulding the land to create large scale fun objects that are exciting yet safe for children to play on. In 2006, this project was specially selected to be exhibited as part of ‘The Good Life: New Public Spaces For Recreation’ organised by the Van Alen Institute in New York.
