New project: Greyfriars Community Project, Edinburgh

Following an invited competition, Gareth Hoskins Architects have been commissioned to prepare a feasibility study for the redevelopment of the Greyfriars Kirkhouse in Edinburgh’s Old Town. The joint venture between Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh City Council and Hillcrest Housing Association aims to develop a community facility that will support the homeless and disadvantaged in Edinburgh. The proposals will focus on the continued provision and development of the site, which has long been a centre for charities and initiatives providing support services to help the homeless integrate back into the wider community. The project, at a proposed cost of £2million, will incorporate consultation rooms; training spaces to encourage and develop skills in IT, woodwork, home-making, arts and crafts; plus a public café and shop. It is also the intention to create 16 supported flats within the development.
