“The £60,000 skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex imported from Montana in the United States is the star attraction in a parade of exotic creatures that will be brought to Edinburgh with the £46.6million refurbishment of the Royal Museum of Scotland.
The revitalised museum, to open in 2011, will include 16 new galleries and promises to double the number of objects on display from 6,000 to 12,000. Visitor numbers are expected to increase by a fifth to more than one million a year, more than twice the population of the city.”
Gordon Rintoul, Director of the National Museum of Scotland, said, “This is a capital city in an important European country. This is a major museum and it has to have that presence and drama. Many of its treasures are rarely displayed, material of Scottish and world importance. This is an opportunity to get things out of store cupboards and display them, sometimes for the first time.”
